Mastering Back-to-School Organization with 3 Tips: Your Guide to a Smooth Start

Embrace the New School Year with Organizational Mastery

The back-to-school season is upon us once again, bringing with it a mix of excitement and nerves. As you get ready for a new school year, learning the art of organization can make such difference. From managing schedules and assignments to keeping your workspace tidy, effective organization sets the stage for a successful year ahead. Here are three tips and strategies that anyone can implement to have a streamlined back-to-school experience.

1. Set Up a Dedicated Workspace: Your Hub of Organization

Creating a dedicated workspace is a game-changer in the realm of organization. Designate a specific area in your home for this purpose – it could be a desk in a room, a wall space, or a dedicated area in the house. Whatever the area, be sure that it is for getting work done. I recommend a few essential items in this workspace: a calendar, a corkboard/whiteboard, a clock, writing utensils, and supplies to get your work done. The calendar is as a visual representation of marking important dates, assignments, and extracurricular activities. The corkboard can hold important papers (multiplication table, reading goals, etc), while the whiteboard is perfect for jotting down quick reminders and to-dos. For kids, I suggest a small white board that can easily serve as a way to work on homework or make a to do list while they sit down to work on homework. A clock is an important tool to help keep you accountable for the work that you need to get done. It can be your best friend or your worst enemy— I suggest you use it to your advantage. Having a clock (especially a clock to specifically help with executive functioning) helps keep you accountable while getting homework done. Writing utensils and supplies to get work done saves a lot of time. Believe it or not, disrupting your workflow to find a scissors or a highlighter wastes twice as much time as you may think. Kids can also use this as an excuse to get up and get off track. Help your child feel successful when they sit down to get their homework done.

2. Master the Art of Time Management: Create a Schedule & Use a Planner

Crafting a daily or weekly schedule can work wonders in helping you manage your (and your child’s) time effectively. Allocate specific time blocks for homework/study sessions, breaks, and extracurricular activities. Let your child help you come up with a schedule so that they feel invested in what they came up with. Try to stick to your schedule as closely as possible, and remember to incorporate buffer time for unexpected events. By following a structured routine, you'll boost your productivity and reduce the risk of last-minute stress for you and your child.

Additionally, we are big fans of both paper and digital tools and know that both can be equally beneficial. The first thing to decide is at what age your child can independently use digital tools. If they aren’t there, choose paper options that are fun and functional. There are so many planners out there that are specific to kids and homework — make it a fun activity to find a planner that will help them feel successful as they plan out their school week and homework schedule. And remember, the act of physically writing down tasks can enhance memory retention and help your child stay on top of their responsibilities.

3. Declutter Your Study Space: A Clear Mind Starts with a Clear Desk

A cluttered study space can hinder focus and productivity. Before the school year kicks off, take some time to declutter and organize the workspace that will be used for homework. Keep only the essentials on your desk and try to limit the distractions. Investing in storage solutions like shelves, drawers, and desk organizers help keep everything tidy and provide a sense of calm. A clean and organized study environment sets the stage for successful learning.
