Starting the New Year off Right

Happy New Year!

It is officially 2025 and I’m sure that you have a lot of feelings, emotions, and excitement around the end of something and the start of something else. Many people look to the new year as a fresh start, which is great. It’s a great time to reset, refocus, and reengage. Whether or not you make resolutions, set goals, or think about your intentions moving forward, do what feels good to you.

One thing that I have noticed over the past few years with clients is that they get really excited and motivated in the new year and want to tackle a million projects… and although I love the mentality, I want to encourage everyone to start small. It’s easy to get burnt out on tackling a project that’s too big or overcommitting your precious time.

So here is my thought on getting started: take a step back and focus on one area that would make a big impact on your day to day.

Let’s Get Started

Whether it’s your bedroom closet that is always a disaster or your mudroom that is consistently an eyesore, pick one area. And pick the area that causes you a lot of frustration (it doesn’t have to be the most… you might need to save that one for a professional hint hint)

Once you’ve committed to that area, think about the purpose of the area [EX the purpose of my closet is to hold the clothes I wear and make them accessible to me].

Think about what that area actually does [EX my closet is the bane of my existence because it’s too small, it’s always messy, and I never have anything to wear].

Now think about how you can address the problems:

Too small – can you make it bigger? Probably not. Can you make it more functional? Probably… think about the ways that you can do that: install shelving, fold or bin items, and get rid of the things you don’t wear.

Always messy – are there clothes on the floor? Do you not like hanging? Maybe you can have bins or fold clothes instead. Maybe a dresser would be helpful. Another thought is that there may be too many items… you could probably get rid of the things you don’t wear or use.

Nothing to wear – a closet edit is a beautiful thing. Many of us hold on to that pair of jeans that we are determined to fit into or the beloved sweater that just needs to be mended… let it go (or get it mended). There’s also no reason to hold onto clothes that you never reach for – it is taking up valuable space, space, which if I’m not mistaken, you were previously short on. Grab a snack, put on your favorite playlist, and edit your closet. All of that stuff that you don’t wear or are unsure of, get rid of it! Are you sensing a pattern?

Does that seem doable? I hope that for some of you, it does. And if the whole process still feels overwhelming, give me a call – I’ve got you. I can help with some of it, all of it, or just help you through the process. Organizing, decluttering, editing… it is not for the faint of heart, trust me.
